Raising
Streptocarpus/Cape Primrose
from seed is a great indoor project for gardeners and plant lovers.
We are offering seeds from our hand-pollinated plants. The pictures show the parent plants, as well as several of their offspring. Flowers from 3 to 6 cm across are held atop wire-thin stems rising from loose rosettes of velvet-soft, arching leaves. Colors range from white through pale rose and lavender to deep violet, midnight blue, and rich cerise. Some flowers have sharp, ornate markings; others have boldly colored contrasting centers.
We are currently packaging seeds collected in fall 2020 from plants that bloomed in spring and summer 2020. Our range of seed-parents and pollen-parents is greater and more various every year. Most of the seeds are from our own seed-grown plants; there will also be a few seeds from named cultivars in the mix. Most of the flowers were pollinated with other unnamed seedlings, and some were pollinated with named cultivars. If you would like seeds from named cultivars, please take a look at our other listings.
Plants
raised from these seeds will not
be identical to the parent(s). Some will resemble one or both of
the parents in colour, form, size, and/or markings, and some may not
closely
resemble either parent. Expect to be surprised and delighted by the variations in colouring, size, form, and patterning. We have
posted pictures of some plants we grew from these seeds on the blog,
Primrose Fields: Scenes from a Garden in Edmonton, Canada. Look in the
category “Streptocarpus Propagation.”|
We test our seeds every 3-4 months and add new seeds all the time. Our routine tests produce better than 80% germination within 4 weeks.
Seeds begins to sprout within two weeks of sowing, and first flower buds appear 4-6 months later. Display your potted plants outdoors in summer, in a cool, shady spot, or keep them indoors in a window or under lights. A well-tended plant at its peak, usually
beginning in early summer, will cascade with blossoms for many weeks,
and can go on flowering, at a lesser rate, through autumn and into the
darkest days of winter. Streps are easy, rewarding houseplants all year round. We have them sitting in windows on every side of the house, where they flourish in bright, indirect natural light.
The seeds are very small and can be tricky to handle, but each packet is sure to contain more than the stated number. We also provide a page of detailed instructions to get you started.
